It can be difficult for a student to choose what courses to take in school, especially if you do not know what interests you. It is beneficial to participate in courses through various subjects to gain as much knowledge as possible and to find something you are passionate about. While taking a graphic design course may not be everyone’s first choice, there are many benefits to learning this skill that goes beyond art.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines graphic design as “the art or profession of using design elements (such as typography and images) to convey information or create an effect.” While this may seem straightforward, graphic design extends beyond its basic definition and can be applied in many areas beyond just creativity. In today’s digital age, visual communication is an essential part of everyday life, whether in marketing, branding, or social media. By learning graphic design, students not only gain technical proficiency in certain softwares such as the Adobe Suites, but they also develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and artistic skills. Graphic design encourages students to think creatively and communicate ideas effectively, which are valuable assets in any career.

When I took my first graphic design course during my sophomore year of high school, I felt a whole new set of skills unlocked in my brain. It was very eye-opening to learn something I did not know much about but felt I could ultimately have a career in later in life. It took practice and patience to learn the ins and outs of this skill and its platforms, just like playing a sport or an instrument, but it was very rewarding once I created something that I was proud of. Being able to exemplify a new passion has positively impacted me as a student and growing professional.

Graphic design can seem intimidating to someone who knows nothing about it, but it can become a valuable tool in your professional toolbox. “Graphic design is not only a tool for communication but also a lens through which we understand the world,” said Goran Paun of Artversion.

Graphic designs help to cultivate personal expression, but also open doors to professional opportunities as learning such a skill are sought after in many fields. The next time you plan your course load for the upcoming semester, consider enrolling in a graphic design course. It might ignite your interest in something that's both creative and valuable!
